5 Things You Didn't Know About The 3rd Trimester

1: Baby's eyes begin to open!

At 27 weeks, your baby's eyes open. They learn to focus as well as distinguishing between light and dark. If you shine a torch on your belly, you may notice baby becoming more active. They are able to see the light coming into your womb. Their tiny pupils will be constricting and dilating, and hopefully working out the difference between day and night!

2: Baby's hair starts to grow!

Lanugo, the soft hair that coats baby's body, starts to fall off in the first trimester. But hair then begins to grow at around 30 weeks on their head. At 32 weeks baby's eyelashes and eyebrows begin to grow.

3: Baby is gaining weight at incredible speed!

From weeks 28-32, baby is gaining roughly 500g each week. That is the equivalent to a tub of margarine!

As baby is expanding, so will your bump. So time to make the most out of your maternity wear or stretchy clothing.

4: Baby is getting ready for their first poop!

In the final weeks of pregnancy, meconium, baby's first poop consisting mostly of blood cells, vernix and lanugo, starts to build up in baby’s intestines. Very similar to black tar, it can take lots of effort to clean off baby's bum!

5: Baby's heart rate begins to slow

At 28 weeks, your baby’s heartbeat will have slowed to around 110 beats per minute. At it's peak in weeks 9-10 it was around 170 bpm.
